Certified Carbon Offsets Explained: VCS, Gold Standard, and UNFCCC

As companies work toward improving sustainability, carbon offsetting often becomes part of the consideration. While emissions reduction should always come first, high-quality carbon offsets—when certified by reputable standards—play an important and legitimate role in addressing emissions that cannot yet be eliminated. Understanding the merits of these certified offsets is essential when looking at Carbon Neutral certification.

Sandland Packaging are fully Carbon Neutral

It’s Important to say that Sandland Packaging have been fully Carbon Neutral for 4 years, including Scope 1, 2 and all 15 categories in Scope 3, supported by Turning the Black Country Green, an organisation which assists businesses with calculating carbon footprints, creating reduction plans, and offsetting emissions. Carbon Neutral status has been achieved with a three part strategy of measuring emissions across the organisation, reducing emissions wherever possible and then offsetting what cannot currently be removed. This focus is a strong programme which has led to consistent improvements over this time.

Customer benefits of buying Carbon Neutral packaging

For customers, this means any packaging bought from Sandland Packaging is certified Carbon Neutral and can be reported as such for any GHG audits.

Why Carbon Offsets are needed

Carbon offsets represent verified reductions or removals of greenhouse gas emissions generated outside a company’s own operations. In the packaging supply chain, residual emissions often remain after efficiency improvements, renewable energy sourcing, and material optimisation. Certified offsets provide a means to address these remaining emissions while longer-term reduction strategies are implemented.

Sandland Packaging have always invested in the highest quality Carbon Offsetting Certificates

An essential for the Sandland Packaging team has always been ensuring the offsetting step is done with the greatest integrity and have always invested in the highest quality offsetting programmes.

Transition to ISO14068-1

PAS2060 Carbon Neutrality was no longer supported as of December 2025 and has been superseded by ISO14068-1. As part of the transition to ISO 14068-1, the demand from the quality of carbon credits has increased and they must adhere to the below criteria in order to support all claims of carbon Neutrality under ISO14068-1.

Increased quality criteria for Carbon Credits:

a) REAL – GHG emission reductions or real GHG removal enhancements.

b) ADDITIONAL – demonstrated using a robust assessment that shows the activity would not have occurred in the absence of the GHG project and represent climate change mitigation that exceeds regulatory requirements.

c) MEASURABLE – in accordance with approved carbon crediting programme methodologies for the calculation of relevant GHG baselines.

d) PERMANENT – shall be issued by a carbon crediting programme that has adequate safeguards in place to ensure the risk of reversal is minimalized.

e) CERTIFIED – have been certified by a suitably qualified body and be independently verified for the GHG emission reduction or removal.

f) TRANSPARENT – issued with unique serial numbers, be permanently retired under a traceable registry

g) SDG – identify Sustainable Development Goals to which each GHG project contributes.

h) TIME SPECIFIC – the end of vintage is no more than five years prior to the start of the period and represent GHG reductions/removals that have already occurred. In addition, the retirement must take place no later than twelve months after the end of the reporting period.

Carbon Offsetting credibility

The credibility of an offset depends heavily on the standard under which it is certified. Reputable frameworks such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard, and mechanisms under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) provide confidence that offsets represent real, measurable climate benefits.

Verified Carbon Standard (VCS)

The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), administered by Verra, is one of the most widely used offset programmes globally. VCS projects must demonstrate additionality (the emissions reduction would not have occurred without the project), undergo independent third-party verification, and follow strict monitoring and reporting requirements. For packaging buyers, VCS certification provides assurance that purchased offsets are robust, traceable, and aligned with recognised global methodologies.

Gold Standard Carbon Offsetting

The Gold Standard goes a step further by combining climate impact with sustainable development benefits. In addition to reducing or removing emissions, Gold Standard projects often support clean water access, biodiversity protection, or improved livelihoods in local communities. For brands seeking to align packaging decisions with broader ESG or social impact goals, Gold Standard offsets offer a way to deliver both environmental and social value while maintaining high integrity.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

Offsets associated with the UNFCCC, such as those developed under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) or successor frameworks, are rooted in international climate governance. These projects are subject to rigorous oversight and standardized methodologies approved at a global level. For buyers operating across multiple regions or reporting under international frameworks, UNFCCC-linked offsets can support consistency and regulatory credibility.

Using offsets verified under well-established standards helps:

• Provide reassurance of the quality of the projects

• Supports audit-ready carbon neutral or net-zero claims

• Aligns with expectations under ISO 14068

It also ensures that offsetting is used responsibly—only for residual emissions after meaningful reductions have been pursued.

In practice, certified offsets enable climate action while there is continued investment in lower-carbon materials, considerations on energy use, and circularity improvements. Offsetting projects certified by VCS, Gold Standard, or UNFCCC-recognised programs are a credible tool that supports both climate progress and responsible procurement.

Offsetting is not a shortcut— when done right, it is a valuable part of a credible, standards-aligned carbon strategy.
